Gerberas – An Eye-Catching Alternative

Just what is it that makes Gerberas such a popular flower throughout the world? It may be that they are larger than many of the other flowers often put into cut flower arrangements. With a flower that measures close to 8 inches, or 18 cm across, they are sure to catch the eye of just about anyone that passes by. Another reason for the popularity is most likely the fact that they are available in quite a few different colours. Hybridization has made it possible for florists to offer Gerberas in colours ranging from beautiful, deep reds to write yellows and pinks.

Another reason for the sheer popularity of Gerberas is the fact that they last longer than many other flowers when placed in a vase. This means that a person who purchases a beautiful flower arrangement featuring Gerberas can expect their beauty the last for quite a while rather than immediately withering up and dying. Gerberas are also a flower that is not light-sensitive which means that they are perfect for indoor arrangements.

Freesias – The Facts

Although they may not be as popular some of the other types of flowers often sent to friends and loved ones, freesias are quickly becoming a favourite among both senders and receivers of flower arrangements. This is because they are a long-lasting flower that is available in a variety of colours. Another aspect of freesias that is not to be forgotten is the fact that they are one of the most beautifully fragrant flowers available. Unlike some of the other flowers known for their scent, freesias have a sweet smell that is not overpowering.

Originally from Africa, freesias are named after Dr. Freese of Germany. They have been cultivated for quite some time, primarily for use as cut flowers, although some individuals grow them in their gardens. These flowers are especially well-suited for arrangements that are more casual in nature rather than the more formal arrangements often seen at a local florist shop. They are the perfect complement for any room and are often used in wedding arrangements because of their symbolic link to innocence and purity.

Curcumas – The Trendiest Tropical Around

Tropical flowers are often big and ostentatious. Curcumas are blooms that have intense pink petals but are less ostentatious than other tropical blossoms. The simple and contemporary lines of this lovely member of the ginger family make it a kit in any décor. A bit of spice in a traditional bouquet, the curcuma is a flower that adds mystery and excitement. In a tropical arrangement, curcuma blossoms are a more rigid contrast to the wide open look of many orchids and lilies.

However, one of the most stunning ways to display this outstanding tropical flower is to group the curcuma blooms in a tight circle with leaves forming a ‘frame’ around the outer edge of the circle. This forms a dramatic, homogenous bunch of curcumas that was made popular as a wedding bouquet, but is stunning as a table centrepiece or as a gift bouquet. Whatever, the occasion, these tropical beauties make a statement and are tangible joy in a room.

Lilies – A Useful and Beautiful Flower

Most of us think of lilies only for their beauty and use in floral arrangements. However, there are other uses for this magnificent flower. Even the bulb is much more useful than just sitting in the ground and providing the food the plant needs over the winter months. Depending on the species, the bulbs can be edible or even beneficial for medicinal purposes.

For instance, in some countries, Tiger Lily bulbs are an alternative to potatoes. They are cooked and eaten as a staple, starchy vegetable.

Madonna lily bulbs are used in treatments for skin irritations and rashes. Tiger lily can help treat throat problems and even chest pains.

Some lily bulbs, like those of Lilium Brownii, are used to thicken soups and stews. They have a sweet, crisp flavour.

If you have cats, you should be aware that lilies can be very toxic to cats. They can cause vomiting, respiratory problems, and even death.

The Tulip Life Cycle

The native climate for a tulip is the mountains of Central Asia, where they receive cold winters and hot, dry summers. They are perennials, but many people all over the world plant tulip bulbs and after blooming, dig up the bulbs to plant again like annuals. To effectively grow tulips, you should have an idea of the life cycle of the tulip. A member of the liliaceous family of plants, the tulip has a bulb that contains the necessary nutrients for enduring a cold winter season. The bulb should be planted in fall (typically mid-September to mid-November).

During the first two months, the tulip bulb will put out roots and establish a strong root system in the cool, moist ground. At the end of winter, the snow begins to thaw and the tulip sends up a sprout (green shoot). The blooming season for tulips is usually anywhere from March through May, depending on climate, species, and weather. The final stage in the life cycle of a tulip is the post-bloom phase. The foliage uses photosynthesis to store food in the bulb for the following winter. When this is accumulated, the plant withers and enters dormancy.
